Bluebell and Think: Rockway Robotics in the community

Think Float at KW Oktoberfest

Hey guys, with the end of Rockway’s Feed Bluebell campaign I thought it would be nice to look back at Rockway Robotics involvement with Rockway’s environmental campaigns.

The Think campaign was a multi-year project targeting the over-reliance on single use plastic. The campaign started with an art project by Rockway alumna Ellery Ezekiel who made the steel letters filled with plastic bottles. This concept was expanded upon by teacher Sara Wahl who worked with students to create an amazing music video covering Joan Jett’s “I Hate Myself For Loving You.” Rockway Robotics was heavily involved behind the scenes filming and editing, with over 50% of the crew being robotics members. Our very own 2024 FRC driver Angus Lee even provided his drumming skills for the track. The Think campaign was invited to participate in the KW Oktoberfest parade in October 2023 as the first environmentally-themed float of this popular event. Our robotics team was instrumental in the construction of the float that was featured on the CTV broadcast.

Our school had a campaign this year called Feed Bluebell where we would give our food scraps from the cafeteria to Bluebell the Pig. Bluebell was a real pig who belongs to one of our teachers, Mr. Dyck-Steinmann. The robotics team’s involvement in this campaign was designing and coding a game to teach students what Bluebell could and could not eat. The programming and some of the art was created entirely by members of the Rockway Robotics team. The game was a huge success with over 300 students playing over the course of the month and a half long campaign.

In reflecting on Rockway Robotics’ invaluable contributions to our environmental campaigns, it’s clear that our dedication and creativity have left a lasting impact. From the thought-provoking Think campaign to the heartwarming Feed Bluebell initiative, the robotics team has demonstrated a commitment to sustainability and community engagement. Join us in our journey towards a greener tomorrow.
