Design Goals
In our rookie year most of the team was brand new to first and we are so grateful to the many members of the first community who shared their knowledge and experience. Given our limited resources and knowledge, the team focused on designing a robot that was affordable and achievable, we aimed for a simple fuel scoring mechanism and a climb as a stretch goal.
Robot Mechanisms
The primary mechanism on Igneous is a pneumatically-activated enclosed hopper made of scrap wood and spare polycarbonate from the woodshop. Lovingly called the ‘Dump Truck’, It held a maximum of 5 power cells, fed from the human player station and could score them in lower port in teleop and autonomously. Straddling the bot was our two-stage sliding climb that was powered by a pulley system using kevlar rope, and featured a swiveling hook to allow for approach to the hanging bar at any angle. Passive one-way locking hooks mounted to the climb with cut up tape measures grabbed the 1st stage of the climb to hold the robot up without power.
Match Playstyle
In qualification matches we focused on getting small auto points, simple cycles, and getting climb points every match. In playoffs we coordinated heavily with our alliance mates for an auto routine where we dumped our starting fuel cells into their intake, doubling the amount of game pieces available for them to score in the Inner Port during Auto. After the initial score lead from our auto, we played simple defense and joined our alliance for mighty triple climbs, leading to us winning our first ever event.
